Score 90/100 · Drink 2016-2018, David Schildknecht, Vinous, May 2016

Featuring fruit from contract vineyards in limestone-rich Kallstadt, and raised largely in 500-liter barrels, this seems to hit a sweet spot, with concentrated honeydew melon, herbal essences, and lime being framed or tamed by wood exposure. There is generous succulence to the glycerol-enhanced palate but also a welcome sense of underlying firmness. Juniper berry pungency and copious mineral salts serve for invigoration and salivation in an impressively sustained finish. (The 2014 was still in cask when I last visited the estate, and too wood-dominated for me to offer a fair assessment.)

The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc Trocken shows an intense, fresh and spicy Sauvignon bouquet with a good concentration; it could be easily mixed up with white Graves. Full-bodied, intense and powerful on the palate, this is a concentrated and stimulatingly salty wine that balances its richness very well with a grippy phenolic and tannin structure. This is remarkably good Sauvignon Blanc from Germany that should be aged for another 2-3 years.
