The 2013 Grenache Original Gangster Stagecoach Vineyard is a tiny cuvée, but Pott has nailed the wine. He puts a touch of Petite Sirah in the blend, but it’s the kirsch liqueur, licorice and big savory kiss of fruit on the full-bodied palate that makes this a winner. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.

The 2013 Grenache Original Gangster has really shut down post-bottling. That is not a huge surprise given the personality of the year and Stagecoach, the Atlas Peak site that is the source of this fruit. With time in the glass, hints of bright red stone fruits, mint, wild flowers and cinnamon gradually reveal themselves. The mountain tannins need a few years to soften, but there is a lot going on here.

The 2013 Grenache Original Gangster is even better than the 2012. A real head-turner, the 2013 brings together the lifted, savory profile of Stagecoach, varietal aromas and flavors and the energy of this great Napa Valley vintage, all in a quintessentially classic, mid-weight style. Hints of rose petals, mint and finely sculpted fruit open up in the glass, but the 2013 is ultimately a wine to admire for its exceptional overall balance.
