Score 92/100 · Drink 2025-2038, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Jun 2020

The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Champans offers up inviting aromas of cherries, plums and cassis, complemented by hints of dark chocolate and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's the broadest shouldered and most concentrated of these wines, with tangy acids and fine but chalky structuring tannins.

Tank sample. Deep cherry red. Seductive, deep in fruit. Red cherry and even a touch of dried cherry but not overripe. Not as intense on the palate as I expected, surprisingly silky and nicely fresh. Tight, dry tannins, a little bit strict on the finish. Needs time. (JH)
