The 2003 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is deeper in colour compared to other vintages. It offers a mixture of red and black fruit, missing some definition though I would not describe it as "jammy". The palate is candied on the entry with a smudge of liquorice and impressive substance, but it lacks the transparency that is the signature of a top-class Chambolle-Musigny. Not bad considering the heat of the summer, but it feels molded by the growing season. Tasted blind at the Roumier Les Cras vertical at Medlar, London.

Dark crimson. Quite animal notes on the nose but not as rich and exotic as many 2003s. Sweet start, rather formless – without quite the zest of the Dujac 2003s. A certain rawness – I wonder whether this will ever really deliver? Sort of solid and blocked somehow with no lift. (JR)

Red berry jam on the nose. Comes across as a bit dry in the middle palate, with only moderate clarity of cherry liqueur flavor and verve. Perhaps best today on the finish, which shows good length and grip.
