The 1997 Lagrange has an open-knit, ferrous bouquet with less fruit intensity than the previous vintage as you would expect - scents of gravel and mint eventually emerging. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins and quite sharp acidity. This is a slightly angular Lagrange with a “spiky” finish and some dryness now beginning to emerge on the finish. There is some freshness extant but I would drink this soon. Tasted at the Lagrange vertical at the estate.

Medium red-ruby. Cool, dusty aromas of redcurrant and mint, with hints of berry syrup and game. Sappy, moderately ripe and approachable, with a slightly weedy nuance. A wine of modest definition, complexity and depth but good vinosity. Finishes with fairly fine tannins. "A normal year, not exceptional," says Ducasse. "The biggest problem was the high prices for the '97s. "

Light to medium-bodied, with spicy oak, red currant and cherry fruit, this well-made, lightly tannic effort will provide uncritical drinking over the next 5-7 years.
