Chalky tannins that slowly but surely build in power and grip. Batailley is an estate that manages to seek out the heart of Pauillac in any vintage, and although Lions is leaning into a leaner, more fragrant version of Cabernet Sauvignon, the chalk, slate, crayon and mint still give it appellation character.

The 2024 Lions de Batailley offers fleshy red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit aromas on the nose. The palate is sweet on the entry with black cherry, raspberry and cedar notes, decent weight on the finish and satisfying length. This is a solid, enjoyable second wine.
The blackcurrants and lemons come through clearly here with some oyster shells and flint. This has medium body, a solid center palate and a crunchy, chewy finish. A blend of mostly cabernet sauvignon with merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot.
About the producer
It was on the site of Batailley in 1453 that one of the final battles (or “batailles”) of the Hundred Years’ War took place. Today owned by the Castéja family, the Fifth Growth is renowned for producing wine that is the epitome of classic Claret.
