Score 90+/100 · Drink 2022-2032, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2019

Rocca di Montegrossi's 2017 Chianti Classico is a rich, exuberant wine that is going to need at least a few years in bottle to settle down. Super-ripe, dense and concentrated, the 2017 may very well shock readers with its intensity. Then again, that is 2017. Super-ripe dark plum, espresso, spice and licorice all race out of the glass. It will be interesting to see where the 2017 goes in the coming years. Today, it is shockingly raw and unformed.

Blueberries and cherries with floral and cocoa-powder undertones. Medium to full body, ripe tannins and a flavorful finish. Lovely length to this, especially for this difficult vintage. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Gaiole in Chianti. 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo, 5% Colorino. Dark ruby. Subdued but concentrated. Bags of sweet-sour cherry fruit and a layer of polished tannins. Great length and grip. (WS)
