Things get back on track with the epic 1976 Cabernet Sauvignon. A huge, structured wine, the 1976 blasts across the palate with massive dark fruit followed by more ferrous notes that recall iron, smoke, tobacco and cedar. This is old-school Napa Valley mountain Cabernet - if I can say that – at its best. 97

Sweet floral and spice notes add an attractive element of perfume and lift to the 1976 Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasted after the 1978, the 1976 presents similar density, but with a bit more aromatic complexity and slightly less overall power. The fruit is also distinctly red-toned, with suggestions of plum, smoke, tobacco and cloves that flesh out on the soft, resonant finish. What a gorgeous wine this is.
LAST TASTED 5/93 The impressive saturated plum/dark ruby color suggests considerable extraction and intensity. The wine's bouquet consists primarily of cassis aromas, with hints of herbs, olives, and spices. Full-bodied and still frightfully tannic, but also charged with fruit, this big wine appears somewhat muddled and slightly out of balance. If it ever comes together it will be an admirable effort. It is clearly not as sure a bet as the great 1974 Mayacamas.
