Score 84/100 · Robert Parker, Aug 1994

LAST TASTED 4/94 Raymond's winemaking style during this period was often characterized by an over-zealous use of oak. Although the 1984 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a fine dark ruby color with some amber at the edge, the oak dominates the fruit in the bouquet. In the mouth the wine reveals a muddled character, with plenty of flesh and fruit, but too much tannin and a noticeably woody aftertaste. It is a clumsy wine. Under the ownership of Jean-Charles Boisset, Raymond Vineyards has completely revamped their packaging, winemaking, blends and offerings, and there appears to be a dramatic effort to upgrade the quality of this famous winery that had fallen on hard times. Unquestionably, Raymond Vineyards needed a major infusion of capital, a complete makeover, and a new direction, and Jean-Charles Boisset seems to be pulling out all the stops. Tel. (707) 963-6429
