Intensely pungent mint, pennyroyal and sage deliver a veritable poke in the nose. Behind that, notes of wood resin barely register. But there is a pleasant anticipation of the ripe pear that then lusciously fills the mouth, where the influence of green herbs turns coolingly stimulating. As with this collection’s Jesuitengarten, there are no hard edges here but instead a polished, soothing patina. Nor is there the overt stoniness that sometimes characterizes young wines from these sites. The combination of green herbal essences and hints of barrel in the sustained finish puts me in mind of the sometimes impressive and nearly always audacious top-end Von Winning efforts with Sauvignon Blanc.

Pechstein fruit is powerful enough to be a match for von Winning's wood – though I'm not sure the patina is a positive addtion. Good fruit/acid balance though. (JR)

The 2015 Forster Pechstein Riesling trocken GG opens clear, concentrated and lemon-fresh on the slightly oaky nose; it comes along very attractive, precise and flinty, though young and less developed than the Deidesheim crus. Creamy, with a noble texture and fine tannins, this is a full-bodied, piquant and firmly structured Riesling. The wine has power, grip and tension. A full-bodied and complex Riesling, with a very good grip and aging potential, but is still influenced by oak tannins and flavors.
