Score 93/100 · Drink 2000-2015, Robert Parker, Feb 2000

In short, this wine is sensational. It emerges from what appears to be a spectacular vintage for old vine Shiraz. The opaque purple-colored 1998 Shiraz (made from 25 to 100-year old vines) exhibits a stunning, soaring bouquet offering aromas of creme de cassis, smoked herbs, licorice, tar, and creamy new oak. Full-bodied and super-concentrated, with notions of blackberry jam as well as moderate tannin, this dazzling Shiraz can be drunk now or cellared for 10-15 years. Bright ruby. Crushed dark berries, black cherry, graphite and eucalyptus on the nose, along with a floral topnote. Concentrated and penetrating, with a firm spine of acidity contributing to the sensation of structure. Finishes with firm tannins and lingering flavors of dark berries and dark chocolate.
