Score 90/100 · Drink 2001-2006, Robert Parker, Oct 2001

The 1999 Zinfandel Pato Ranch (produced from a 104-year old vineyard planted in sandy soils) displays a dense ruby color in addition to a sweet, jammy nose of berries, pepper, and resiny balsam aromas. Full-bodied, exuberant, and robust, with silky tannin as well as low acidity, it is a delicious, hedonistically-styled Zinfandel to consume over the next 5-6 years. Tel. (707) 963-8894

Full ruby. Smoky, roasted aromas of chocolate, tree bark and earth. Fat and sweet in the mouth, but less complex and more monolithic than the Tofanelli bottling. This is a bit lower in alcohol at 15.3% but actually tastes like the bigger wine, even if there less flavor interest here. Finishes with strong torrefaction notes. I prefer the more aromatically complex '98 version of this wine.
