The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards unfurls to reveal notes of raspberries, mulberries, dark chocolate and spices. Medium to full-bodied, textural and enveloping, its ample core of gourmand but succulent fruit is structured around ultra-fine tannins. This is very promising and will be hard to resist in its youth.

The 2018 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru, from more clayey soils compared to other Premier Crus and matured in 25% new oak, has a bright, airy bouquet of black currant, wild strawberry and crushed stone aromas, though I would like a little more persistence to develop. The well-balanced palate delivers firm, slightly coarse tannins. But it is delineated and focused, with lovely brine-tinged, crunchy black fruit toward the finish. It will require 3–5 years in bottle, but it should evolve into a fine Brouillards.
