The 2017 Cotes du Rhone Villages Roaix les Hautes Granges, a barrel-aged Syrah, features hints of violets and herbs on the nose and raspberries and dark chocolate on the palate. It's medium to full-bodied, supple and slightly creamy in texture, finishing on a silky, elegant note.

The Syrah-dominated 2018 Côtes Du Rhône Villages Roaix Les Hautes Granges offers more peppery herbs, meat, and garrigue notes as well as medium to full-bodied richness, good mid-palate density, and ripe, polished tannins. It’s not a classic Cotes du Rhone, but the quality of the Syrah-dominated cuvées from the Southern Rhône has soared in recent vintages, and this is a prime example. It has remarkable purity of fruit, plenty of structure, and will keep for over a decade.

From a terroir just like Rasteau, the 2017 Côtes du Rhône Villages Roaix Les Hautes Granges is mostly Syrah brought up all in barrels. Saturated purple in color with a huge nose of blackberries, smoked earth, pepper, and bay leaf, it's full-bodied, has beautiful purity, a big, fat mid-palate, and sweet tannin. It will drink nicely for 4-6 years at a minimum. This Rasteau-based estate is run by Gilles Ferran and is one of my go-to estates when looking for terrific wines that over-deliver.
