(just three barrels made): Bright medium red. Dark, complex nose melds black cherry, raspberry, licorice, minerals and rose petal. Plush, fine-grained and broad on entry, offering a captivating hint of sweetness, then a bit tighter and more compact on the back half. Perhaps not quite as taut in 2016 as Clavelier's top bottlings from Vosne-Romanée but this distinctly horizontal wine is stony, salty and built to last. The chalky, youthfully austere finish shows fine-grained tannins and subtle length.

The 2016 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Combe d'Orveaux was limited to just three barrels this year because of the frost. The hard, rocky, chalky soils are translated into the aromatics, permeating the vivid red fruit (Morello and cranberry leaf). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, elegant from the start with quite a silky texture that is not common in this vintage apropos Chambolle. It gently unfolds, maintains a fine backbone, slightly chalky in texture with impressive tension on the finish. This is a very fine Chambolle considering the growing season. Chapeau.
