The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru is clearly darker in color than others and quite limpid. Intense black cherry, wild strawberry and cassis scents storm from the glass, nicely defined but primal and showing quite a bit of new oak at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fleshy and generous. Quite sweet toward the finish, which is just missing a little depth and complexity considering the status of the vineyard, though it does gain cohesion and poise in the glass. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2017 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is complex and well defined on the nose, where touches of iodine and wild heather infuse the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly grainy texture; notes of black truffle and fresh fig complement a fruit profile that welcomes more red fruit toward the finish. Hints of white pepper and sage linger on the aftertaste. This is certainly beginning to close up in bottle, so allow a decade if you can for this Musigny to show what it is capable of.

The 2017 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a very expressive, complex bouquet, the mélange of red, blue and black fruit making it difficult to identify a single dominant color. Blueberry, wild strawberry and black currant intermingle, and hints of sea spray and touches of orange blossom develop with time. The harmonious, silky palate is almost like a Romanée-Saint-Vivant in texture, offering great depth and an energetic, peppery finish that lingers long in the mouth. A divine Musigny that will deserve some bottle age.
