Hirtzberger's 2021 Ried Hochrain Spitz Riesling Smaragd is dense and somewhat wild on the nose, but it also has clear, bright and elegant fruit. Dense on the palate, very concentrated and powerful, this is a tightly meshed, quite tense, fresh and citrus-driven Veltliner with firm tannins, good length and an elegant finish. Certainly not a wine for now, but it has the potential to surprise. Tasted at Schloss Dürnstein, Wachau, in September 2022.

Spitz. Aged in large barrel. Candied orange peel, orchard fruit and beeswax. Juicy, refreshing apricot delight – balanced and elegant with a long citrus finish. Needs time and air. (PS)
