Made with a small amount of stems and aged in one-third new French oak for 16 months, the 2007 Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard has a cool-climate vibe in its peppery black fruits, roasted herbs, and black fruit-driven style. It shows it California roots on the palate, however, and is a textured, rich effort that has lots of dark fruit, nicely integrated acidity and a clean finish. It's mature yet has been aging gracefully.

The 2007 Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard, a source that has performed brilliantly in the hands of Sonoma winemaker David Ramey, comes across here as lean, austere, and tannic. The wine was totally closed, had a deep ruby/purple color, but the texture seemed suspect, and the level of concentration and ripeness marginal. I suspect the fruit was picked too early, or else the wine is in an ungracious state. www.skylarkwine.com
