Score 91/100 · Drink 2003-2007, Robert Parker, Dec 2003

The impressive, dense ruby/purple-colored 2001 Pinot Noir Hein (277 cases produced from Dijon clones 115, 667, and 777) offers a big, sweet nose of black fruits intermixed with acacia flowers and smoky oak. The wood integration is beautiful, and the wine shows tremendous palate presence with intense concentration yet surprising elegance and overall balance. Drink this beauty over the next 3-4 years. (from vines planted on heavy clay-based soils, which Guthrie says may be "better for pottery") Good full ruby-red. Smoky, meaty aromas of black raspberry, clove and earth. Plump and sweet, with slightly roasted flavors of black cherry and smoked meat. A substantial wine, finishing with dusty, slightly drying tannins.
