A blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes was vinified in concrete and aged in foudre. Stewed strawberries and raspberries mark the nose, carrying along hints of menthol and slight stemminess. Full-bodied, velvety and rich, it's better balanced than the estate's Cuvée Tradition, still a bit warm (16% alcohol), but it's concentrated enough to (mostly) handle it.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes (60% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah) is a step up over the traditional cuvée and has a terrific core of darker berry fruits as well as notes of lavender, herbes de Provence, and ground pepper. Rich, full-bodied, and mouth-filling, it's going to have 15 years of prime drinking.
