Score 88-90/100 · Drink 1998-2010, Robert Parker, Dec 1998

The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses a dark ruby/purple color, and a firm underpinning of tannin, sweet, creamy, black currant flavors intertwined with cedar, Provencal herbs, and new oak. Medium to full-bodied, with a relatively long finish, it should be an excellent, possibly outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon that will be drinkable young, yet keep for 10-12 years. After a dismal beginning, Clos Pegase appears to be getting more serious about wine quality. The owners have wisely brought in Burgundian-trained Ted Lemon to consult, and he appears to be in the process of fleshing out the wines' mid-palates, giving them more length, ripeness, and natural textures. Good deep red-ruby. Plum, licorice and spicy oak on the nose. Denser and sweeter than the '96, with a mineral pungency contributing to an impression of firmness. Finishes with mouthdusting tannins.
