Score 93+/100 · Drink 2025-2036, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jun 2024

The 2021 Chianti Classico Nuovo, 100% Sangiovese, is a rich, powerful wine that is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Dark red-toned fruit, spice, new leather, menthol, tobacco and licorice are all amplified. The 2021 was aged entirely in cement, but even though there is no wood here, there is plenty of structure. This is such a distinct wine. The purity of the fruit is just striking.

Fermented in concrete tank and aged one year in 600-litre unlined concrete egg, which oenologist Piero Lanza believes accentuates the Radda terroir. Sweet, cherry-scented and open. Intensely pure. On the palate, the tannins are so fine they are like crushed stones, fresh and minerally. Refined, long, pure. (JH)
