Score 91/100 · Drink 2023-2038, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate, Apr 2021

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Girolate bursts from the glass with notes of stewed red and black cherries, blackberry compote and sautéed herbs with touches of cedar chest, tobacco leaf and black tea. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a very refreshing backbone cutting through all that oak-tinged red and black fruit with firm, grainy tannins and a lifted finish. Give it a good 2-3 years for the oak to settle and drink it over the next 15+ years.

The 2018 Girolate has a really attractive bouquet of very detailed blackberry and earth aromas, perhaps a touch more floral than I remember it from barrel. The palate is bold but beautifully defined, delivering seamlessly integrated oak, pinpoint acidity and a precision-tooled finish that evidences some very good winemaking. Highly recommended.

Emerging from under the Despagne umbrella, the 2018 Château Girolate has a pretty, perfumed, medium-bodied style that offers lots of black raspberry fruits, hints of vanilla and candied flowers, ripe, silky tannins, and notable balance and charm. It's a rock-solid, outstanding bottle of wine to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years.

The 2018 Girolate has turned out beautifully. Today, the aromatics are super-expressive and lifted, lending a real feeling of precision that is impossible to miss. Silky tannins wrap around a core of red berry fruit in a mid-weight Bordeaux that will drink well right out of the gate. This is very nicely done.
