Score 89/100 · Drink 1997-2012, Robert Parker, Dec 1997

The debut release of 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District is an uncommonly elegant, Margaux-styled wine with medium body, and sweet black currants in the nose with a notion of toasty oak. Good acidity and a soft underbelly make for a pleasant, seductive wine that should drink well young, but keep for 15 years. Mondavi is adding a number of new regionally labeled Cabernet Sauvignons to their portfolio. In addition to their Oakville cuvee, they have a Stags Leap District Cabernet, and a single vineyard wine from their famed To-Kalon plantation. Tel. Slightly more saturated color. Reticent but bright aromas of cassis, tar and smoky oak. Sweeter than the above, but less evolved, more bound-up. Also on the lean side, but has a juicy intensity the above wine lacks. Finishes with good length and sweeter tannins than the last wine.
