The 2012 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens has a satisfying earthy bouquet with broody blackberry fruit mingling with damp earth and woodland scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple, ripe opening. Fleshy redcurrant and cranberry fruit at the fore, good structure and it just seems to finish a little too quickly – just when I was enjoying it! Hopefully it will gain a little volume with bottle age. Fernand and his son Laurent represent the 4th generation of the Pillot family to farm vines around Chassagne. Their holdings were extended in 1992 and again in 2001 following their absorption of vines from Laurent’s wife, hitherto under the Pothier-Rieusset label. Today, they farm 14.6 hectares scattered around some 22 appellations. Some toffee and caramel character here, with more of their hallmark beautiful fruit. Suitably tannic finish for Pommard – grippy but not harsh – and a long, savoury finish. Less overtly fruit-centric than their Charmots – so perhaps more suited to traditionalists. (RH)
