Vineyard produces fruit more like Pommard than Volnay, says Haisma. No stems. Tank sample. Aromatic rather than pretty. Dark-red fruit. This is lovely: perfect ripeness of fruit gives some darker fruit without fruit sweetness. Savoury, a touch of spice, firmly structured, full of pure fruit. Terrific wine. (JH)

The 2021 Volnay Fremiets 1er Cru has quite a light bouquet that just needs a bit more presence. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannins, slightly chalky in texture, a dash of white pepper and a brisk finish. Fine. NB This is the valedictory vintage of Volnay.
