The 2015 Roero Riserva Roche d'Ampsèj is powerful and dense, with quite a bit of richness in its dark, spiced profile. As good as the 2015 is, Roche d'Ampsèj remains dominated by oak and a style that is more about power than finesse, almost as if these choices imprison it. Don't get me wrong - it's an attractive wine, but it could also clearly be so much more than that.

The fruit is at the drier end of the spectrum on the nose with cedar and walnuts taking the main role; some peppermint and dried-blueberry character prevails, though. The medium-bodied palate mainly features the drying tannins, but there are some attractive berries beneath. Tannic. Drink from 2023.
