Score 91+/100 · Drink 2019-2025, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Oct 2017

(aged mostly in 30-hectoliter botti ): Bright medium red. Alluring scents of redcurrant, violet and spices. Juicy and dry on entry, then quite firm, even youthfully lean, in the middle palate, with its slightly high-toned blackberry and violet flavors supported by a firm structural underpinning. This youthfully imploded, seriously tannic Sangiovese, with a low pH of 3.48, already exudes compelling perfume. "We had very low levels of malic acidity in 2014," said Figgins, "so we didn't lose much acidity during the malolactic fermentation." This wine will almost certainly merit an even higher rating if it gains in pliancy with bottle age. The Aglianico component in this wine is from Leonetti's Serra Pedace site near SeVein.

One of the best examples of this variety, the 2014 Walla Walla Sangiovese (it includes 5% Aglianico) offers textbook Sangiovese notes of black cherry, spice, sappy herbs and a hint of rose petal. Medium to full-bodied, silky, and seamless it has beautiful polish and elegance, and while I’d happily drink bottles today, I suspect it will keep for a decade or more.
