A cool vintage in Tuscany, which translates into a more classic dark fruit character to the Cabernet Sauvignon. Vibrant and mouthwatering, with blueberry and cassis fruits along with raspberry leaf, soot, slate and liqourice. Tells the story of the vintage, and takes you back to a Bordeaux-style Cabernet, with less exuberant spicing, which is either enjoyable or disappointing depending on your persuasion. Personally, this is an excellent wine but I miss the sense of place from the more Tuscan-style years. Ready to drink. 30% new oak, mix of American and French from owners Marchesi Mazzei.

The 2014 Philip is Mazzei's 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from estate vineyards in both Chianti Classico and Maremma. Ripeness and textural depth are pushed to the limit in this powerful, super-concentrated wine. Although not at all subtle, the 2014 speaks with distinction. Time in the glass adds brightness to the dark red cherry and plum notes in this plush, inviting wine. It will be interesting to see how the Philip ages. It is certainly impressive as a young wine.
