This bottle of 1989 Climens replicates the stunning showing at the château the previous year. Yellow plum and saffron soars on the electrifying nose, just breathtaking delineation and vibrancy. The palate is likewise brimming over with energy, very intense yet brilliantly poised with a purity on the finish that I feel that Climens rarely achieved in that era. Killer. Tasted at the 1989 Bordeaux dinner at 67 Pall Mall.

The 1989 Climens retains its glorious bouquet of copious scents of dried honey, saffron, barley sugar and gingerbread - so vibrant and engaging. This feels as if it has more vim and vigor than the 1999 tasted alongside. The harmonious palate is full of life and mellifluous in texture, featuring quince and stewed apricot mixed with lemongrass toward the persistent finish. Superb. Tasted from a bottle in my own collection.
Marmalade colour and wonderfully refreshing as well as orange peel sweetness. Very satisfying already without being anywhere near its end. Sweet but not heavy with lots of freshness. (JR)

Château Climens is one of Sauternes-Barsac’s leading producers of sweet wine. Classified as a Premier Cru or First Growth in 1855 it sits alongside just 10 other Premier Cru estates in Sauternes, only bettered by Ch. d’Yquem, which was granted its own elite classification of Premier Cru Supérieur.
