Score 90/100 · Drink 2012-2030, Robert Parker, Dec 2003

A blend of 39% Petit Verdot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 11% Cabernet Franc (an unusual combination), the inky ruby/purple-colored 1999 Reserve is a full-bodied, chewy, massive red with huge muscle and depth as well as excruciatingly high levels of tannin. It reminded me of some of the old Mt. Veeder wines from the mid-seventies. It should last ... survive may be a better word ... for 30+ years, but whether it will ever develop harmony is anyone’s guess. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030? Tel. (707) 942-0930

Deep ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, blueberry, licorice, lead pencil and Cuban tobacco. Dense and powerful but rather elegant; the petit verdot contributes to the wine tactile impression. Still rather austere; this will need considerable bottle aging. Note of dark chocolate. Finishes very long and firmly tannic. Compared to this, the Estate cabernet comes across as less dense and more tannic, but also more expressive.
