Score 91/100 · Drink 2021-2033, Jeb Dunnuck, Jan 2021

I found all of these latest releases from VGS Chateau Potelle to be borderline over-ripe, but they all hide it well. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon VGS comes from the Saffron Vineyard on Mount Veeder and is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot. It shares the same ripe, up-front, spice-driven style of all these 2018 releases yet has terrific purity, with lots of blue fruits, smoked tobacco, graphite, and roasted herb-like aromas and flavors. This rich, powerful, full-bodied Cabernet has building tannins and a round, opulent texture, and it’s ideal for drinking over the coming 10-12 years.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon VGS is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it strolls nonchalantly out of the glass with open-knit scents of crème de cassis, baked plums and stewed black cherries plus wafts of black truffles, cedar chest, bay leaves and scorched earth. The full-bodied palate is packed with baked black fruits and savory flavors, offering a firm, grainy texture and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy.
