Score 90/100 · Drink 2016-2022, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jun 2016

Full medium red. Red fruits, licorice, leather and a distinctly leesy nuance on the rather wild nose. Juicy and energetic in the mouth, with strong acidity nicely buffered by sweet red fruit flavors. Not a particularly generous or giving wine but boasts excellent fruit retention for its age. This is surprisingly firm at age 20! Tannins turn a bit dry with air. The Bourriquot bottling was owner/winemaker Michael Havens's take on Cheval Blanc.

The 1995 Bouriquot, a 66% Cabernet Franc/34% Merlot blend, is winemaker Havens' Napa Valley imitation of Bordeaux's famed Cheval Blanc. It reveals a deep ruby/purple color, followed by big, spicy, mineral, licorice, floral-tinged, blackcurrant aromas, medium body, excellent to outstanding fruit concentration, a soft, layered palate, and a rich, moderately tannic finish. The wine needs 2-3 years of cellaring, but it should keep for 15-18 years, possibly meriting an outstanding rating. (Tasted in barrel.) Tel. (707) 257-3924
