The Syrah-dominated 2016 Nemesis (there’s 9% Mourvèdre and 4% Grenache) is a richer, dense, full-bodied effort that offers plenty of pepper and gaminess as well as darker black fruits and smoke. Aged 18 months in a mix of a new foudre, new casks, and neutral barrels, it’s textured, layered, and beautifully concentrated. It will be better with a year or two of bottle age. I’ve written it numerous time, but Linne Calodo remains one of the reference point estates in Paso Robles. Winemaker/owner Matt Trevisan consistently puts together exotic and singular blends that deliver opulence as well as balance.

Youthful purple. Exotically perfumed aromas of black and blue fruit preserves, licorice candy, five-spice powder and cola, complicated by a suave floral oil nuance. Broad and deeply concentrated on the palate, offering sweet, mineral-tinged cassis and cherry compote flavors along with suggestions of candied violet and cola. Stains the palate and shows superb power and spicy lift on an extremely long, youthfully tannic finish that emphatically repeats the spice and floral notes.
