Peter Michael brings in fruit from the well-known Santa Lucia Highlands' Pisoni Vineyard for his Pinot Noir Le Moulin Rouge. I was knocked out by the deep ruby-colored 2000. It reveals a La Tache-like perfume of sweet forest floor, game, black cherries, strawberries, earth, and herbs in addition to a velvety texture, medium to full body, and 14.5% alcohol that is impeccably concealed by the wine's glycerin and richness. Low acidity suggests consumption over the next decade is warranted. Tel. (707) 942-4459; Fax (707) 942-0209

Bright saturated ruby-red. Pungently aromatic nose of raspberry, red cherry, rose petal and white pepper. Juicy and dry, but with terrific flavor intensity; wild strawberry and raspberry fruit call to mind a wine from the southern Cote de Nuits. Conveys a strong impression of soil character. Finishes with substantial but fine and nicely integrated tannins and excellent persistence. Impressively dense and fine.
