Score 87/100 · Drink 2030, Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2020

I love the 1974 Château Clos de Sarpe, which is certainly a solid wine from this difficult vintage. Lots of sous bois, black tea, tobacco, and dried cedar all emerge from the glass, and it has a surprisingly sweet core of fruit, medium-bodied richness and depth, and a great finish. The tannins are completely resolved, and I'd be happy to drink a bottle any time over the coming decade.

Clos de Sarpe

This small Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé estate is a FINE+RARE favourite. Run by Maylis Marcenat, the fourth generation of her family to do so, the 3.7-hectare vineyard has old vines and limestone soils, producing wines of incredible freshness and great ageability.
