The 2015 Barolo San Giovanni is a deep and penetrating expression with a tight and nervous streak of dark fruit that will require more bottle aging before it starts to unwind. In fact, I found many of the wines from Monforte d'Alba to be longer-term wines in this vintage compared to the other villages of the Barolo appellation. Smoke, tar and licorice lift gently from the glass. I would recommend waiting at least five more years before opening this bottle. Some 4,500 bottles were made.

The 2015 Barolo San Giovanni is darker and richer than the straight Barolo, but as is so often the case, the differences between the two wines are more stylistic than truly qualitative. Dark cherry, mocha, spice and balsamic notes are framed by a kiss of new French oak. A good bit of mid-palate density and creaminess gives the San Giovanni much of its immediacy.

Aromas of sweet, ripe cherries with graphite, as well as cedar and dried rose petals. Plenty here. The fresh palate has a long and juicy array of lightly spiced strawberry and red-cherry flavors. Neat and juicy finish with freshness and energy. Try this from 2022.
