Score 86/100 · Drink 2001-2008, Robert Parker, Jun 2001

The 1997 Barolo Vigna Rionda (a great vineyard in Serralunga) exhibits a dark garnet color as well as a sweet nose of cedar, spice box, licorice, toffee, and tobacco. In the mouth, it is creamy, round, medium-bodied, and easy to drink. This offering is a medium weight, evolved, lush Barolo to drink over the next 6-7 years. Medium ruby-red, a bit less saturated than the Bussia Soprana. Rather sauvage aromas of roasted plum, tobacco, smoke and leather; distinctly less primary than the Bussia Soprana. Sappy-sweet and fat in the mouth, with a suggestion of berry syrup. Finishes with rather strong, slightly drying tannins but good lingering sweetness of fruit.
