Score 89/100 · Drink 2025-2029, Jeb Dunnuck, Jun 2025

Lively red and black fruits, spicy wood, dried herbs, and licorice notes all emerge from the 2009 Châteauneuf Du Pape, a solid, slightly savory effort that's medium-bodied, has supple tannins, and good sweetness of fruit. It's mature and drinking at point today yet has another 5-6 years of enjoyable drinking. Based on 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, it was vinified in concrete tanks and aged in old barrels for 18 months. Drink: 2025-2029.

The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape (mostly Grenache blended with a small quantity of Mourvedre and aged in old oak barrels) displays powerful levels of fruit and glycerin along with a full-bodied, earthy, slightly structured style for a 2009. Although it is showing less impressive fruit and length than it did last year, it remains a very fine Chateauneuf du Pape that should age nicely for at least a decade. This relatively small Chateauneuf du Pape estate is owned by Coralie Goumarre. Importer: Vintage Imports, Bristol, PA; tel. (215) 788-1300

Furry, over-the-top aromas that may come from a sample that’s just slightly too old. Very, almost pastiche-like, sweet! This isn’t wine, it’s candy! Drying tannins. Maraschino flavours. Really quite painful to taste. But it will please anyone looking simply for sweetness and a good name... (JR)
