The 1988 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie opens up with a big blast of saddle leather, spiced meat, bacon and smoky tobacco aromas and there’s little doubt that this is a mature northern Rhone syrah. Complex, interesting, and with good intensity to the aromas, this has a medium bodied palate that’s integrated, soft and balanced. With air, this shows a ting too much acidity for the fruit but the sheer complexity and interest on the nose makes up for it. Beautiful but drink up.

The 1988 Cote Rotie has already thrown a heavy sediment because of its admirable extraction level. Opaque black/purple, with an incredible knockout bouquet of cassis, leather, herbs, smoked meats, and Asian scents (soy), this fabulously rich, dense, chewy Cote Rotie has a texture that reminded me of a great Pomerol. I have had it open for as long as three days without seeing any degree of oxidation. This is a profound example of Cote Rotie. Anticipated maturity: 1998-2020. Last tasted 12/95.
