The 2023 Herrenberg GG Recher Spätburgunder has a fragrant and elegant nose of ripe red fruits, especially cherries, accompanied by toasty notes, particularly mocha. It is full-bodied, juicy and initially very intense on the palate but with slightly bitter and tart tannins on the finish. It's reminiscent of Cuban cigars at this stage but still very brittle. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden, August 2025.

A luminous purity of fruit – a single, sun-ripened cassis berry and a hint of tomato vine that speaks of slate, not limestone. The texture is exceptionally silky and lissom. While the tannins feel gentler than in years past, the coiled tension within is just as strong, weaving through complex notes of spice and cigar box into a long, heartbreakingly smoky and resonant finish. A profound exercise in elegance. (PS)
