Tasting notes

Tasting notes
Score 90-92/100 · Pierre Rovani, Oct 1999

The dark ruby-colored 1997 Richebourg exhibits aromas reminiscent of a compote of red and black fruits, figs, and violets. On the palate, this medium to full-bodied wine is complex, expansive, broad, and offers briary blackberries, white pepper, and earth-like flavors. Its finish appeared to be compressed and somewhat hot (hence the question mark), yet if Mongeard is capable of overcoming this during elevage, it has the making of a first-rate wine. Vincent Mongeard, who now runs this famous estate, is extremely happy with his 1997s. "When I compare my wines to those of my colleagues, I am comforted in what I was able to achieve. Even though it is not the vintage of the century, it is certainly extremely good." Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel (205) 980-8802.
