(bottled in December; the estate lost 70% of this fruit and Geraldine Godot vinified with 100% whole clusters to help fill a large tank): Good medium red. Spicy, lively aromas and flavors of black raspberry, dark chocolate and black pepper. Nicely combines solid density and spicy lift, with its obvious whole-cluster character supported by sweet fruit. Finishes firm and juicy, with good cut.

The 2016 Côte de Nuits-Villages Clos du Chapeau includes 100% whole cluster fruit and 50% new oak (six barrels, three new). This offers more red fruit on the nose than the Hautes Côtes de Nuits Rouge, perhaps without quite the same perfume and lift. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity, quite citrus-like in style, edgy and maybe angular. I would just like a little more cohesion and smoothness on the finish, and that may well develop with bottle age.
