Cleaner-tasting than the 2019 edition, Saumades's 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers appealing notes of black cherries, plums and hints of cola-like spices. A 90-10 blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre from sandy soils, it's full-bodied, reasonably concentrated and rich, with a long, velvety finish balanced by bright acids.

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is outstanding, with lots of juicy blackberry and black raspberry-like fruit as well as notes of violets, spring flowers, and peppery garrigue. It’s medium-bodied and nicely balanced, has soft tannins, and is another straight-up charming red in the vintage. The blend is 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre, all from the sandy soils of the Pignan lieu-dit.

50% Grenache Blanc, 25% Clairette, 25% Bourboulenc. Aged in old barrels.  Dull and a little heavy without any aromatic attraction. Palate fleshy and round with adequate fruit and a stony freshness but little length on the finish. (JL)
