Vivid purple. Lively aromas of fresh dark fruits, smoky minerals and black pepper are complemented by a deeper olive note. Supple and sweet on entry, then tighter in the midpalate, offering juicy black raspberry, cherry and violet pastille flavors supported by a spine of zesty minerality. Shows very good clarity and repeating florality on the persistent finish, which is framed by smooth, slow-building tannins.

Attractive green olive and raspberry notes mark the nose of the 2016 Cote Rotie, but this medium-bodied effort isn't particularly concentrated or layered, coming off as a bit reserved and ungenerous.

Tasted out of barrel, the 2016 Côte Rôtie has plenty to love and offers a peppery, meaty, herbal edge as well as a fresh, straightforward style on the palate. Made from 100% Syrah aged in 30% new oak, drink it on release and over the following decade.

Vegetal aromas with juicy black fruit. Quite light on the palate, without the substance and drive expected. Well-balanced tannin and acid, but lacks sufficient flavour interest. (RH)
