The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru is more tertiary on the nose, backward at first, but opens nicely with aeration. The palate is well balanced, quite citrus-fresh on the entry, fine tension, sports a slight reduction towards the finish that should hold it in good stead as it matures in bottle, though it does become more pronounced with aeration. The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has an energetic nose, perhaps less malic than when I tasted this from barrel. The palate is well balanced with a sappy opening, good depth, a slightly waxy in texture and that crucial acidic line keeping everything on an even keel. Great potential, though I suspect the 2019 will exhibit more elegance.
The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru comes form the lieu-dit of Au Chaniots, toward the flatter, bottom part of the vineyard on clayey soils. It has a little more delineation on the nose than the La Garenne, and perhaps a bit more Puligny DNA, with touches of Granny Smith apple developing in the glass. The palate is fresh on the entry with a fine bead of acidity, which supplies the nervosité that I find lacking in the La Garenne and provides a nice bite on the finish. This is worth seeking out.
