I have always wanted to try a mature wine from Pierre Morey and finally a 1988 Bâtard-Montrachet comes my way and I am not disappointed. It is blessed with a stunning, mineral-rich bouquet with hints of white peach and yellow plum. You could feel the energy tripping off this Grand Cru. The palate is anointed with perfect acidity and a salinity that leaves the mouth positively tingling for 60 seconds after the wine has departed. This is an awesome wine from a legendary winemaker. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.

The 1988 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru displays the yellow fruit as it had done before, perhaps slightly less mineral-driven on the nose, fleeting glimpses of honeysuckle mixed with butterscotch indicating its maturity. The palate has a wonderful waxy texture, a twist of sour lemon lending tension with a harmonious and very persistent finish. Well-kept bottles will continue to give pleasure for another decade.
