Concentrated ruby. A little closed with minerally hints and a peppery, savoury note and Moroccan leather. Full, almost rich but focused cherry palate with a rich layer of tannins. Very long and chewy, with an elegant medium-weight feel on the finish, where it grows in complexity. (WS)

The nose of the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino has polish, with pristine ripe cherry fruit, soft lavender perfume, and fresh earth. A more classic profile presents itself on the palate, with savory tomato leaf and orange peel, and where tannin and acidity intensify on the finish. Drink 2024-2036. Pierluigi Tagliabue and his grandson, winemaker Luca Belingardi, are at the helm of the Villa Poggio Salvi estate, located south and west of the town of Montalcino.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Villa Poggio Salvi captures the imagination with a display of dried orange peels, mint leaf and crushed strawberries. It’s a soft and juicy expression balanced by tart berries and minerals, yet it’s lacking any serious depth. This tapers off to a dry and youthfully austere feel with a hint of plum and savory herbs. With a few years of cellaring, the 2016 should gain a bit more depth; but overall, it should be considered an earlier-drinking Brunello.
