(50% new oak and 15.5% alcohol): Deep red with a bright rim. Pungent cherry and blackberry scents are lifted by peppery spices and smoky minerals, with a floral note adding complexity. Hefty dark berry and bitter chocolate flavors show good intensity and breadth and an appealing sweetness, with a vanilla flourish on the back half. Quite rich but energetic and focused too, finishing with good punch and lingering smokiness. Fans of plush, creamy pinots will go for this.

More interesting, the 2011 Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard reveals raspberry and wild strawberry characteristics, admirable purity, a light medium ruby color, and much more flavor than the color suggests. Medium-bodied with a velvety texture as well as a decent finish, this classic Pinot should drink well for 2-3 years. I tasted three Pinot Noirs from this winery owned by entrepreneur and vineyard empire builder William S. Price, III. Tel. (707) 935-1863
