Spitz. A steep vineyard with dry-stone walls just north of Spitz and close to the Danube. Shallow, sandy meagre soils based on paragneiss and mica schist. Certified Sustainable Austria. Complex, deep aroma that tangles ripe and spicy citrus with a rich minerally note, more oily-mineral than stony-mineral. Firm, sweet-sour counterpoint on the palate, but it's harmonious not clashing. Needs time but already there's a richness and power showing and a long finish. (JH)

The 2023 Riesling Singerriedel Smaragd was harvested with minimal botrytis of just 1 to 2% of the cleanest berries. Relative restraint defines the nose. The citrus is merely hinted at in the distance, but there is some mandarin and tangerine. The palate comes in with absolute precision and stoniness; yes, this is Hirtzberger. The citrus depth is immense. This is a Singerriedel at the top of its game, with absolute preciseness and calibrated ripeness. Purity, stone, zest and gentle fruit combine harmoniously, with ripeness, restraint and measure. (Bone-dry)
